TBP Presents: Transmitter Brewing (Long Island City, NYC)

On Sunday, August 3rd I headed down to Transmitter Brewing in Long Island City, NYC. As one of NYC’s newest breweries focusing on yeast driven beer, rather than IPAs etc.; their belgian style farmhouse ales are quite unique and pack a lot of complexity. In this tour video founders / breweries Rob And Anthony show me around their nano-brewery and answer a few of my questions that I feel will highlight some of what makes Transmitter Brewing a new brewery with a lot of potential. Enjoy and Cheers!

Seven Blessings Rye Saison Update #1: Let’s Get Funky!

It took me almost 4 weeks, but here’s an update on my Seven Blessings Rye Saison (click here for footage of brew day). First I talk about how primary fermentation went and taste a gravity sample. Then I split the batch by racking it into 2 three-gallon Better Bottle carboys, one of which I add dried apricots and Brettanomyces Bruxellensis to. Hence, this video’s title…Once I bottle the “clean” half of this batch I’ll film and post another update. Cheers!

Beer Stats:

O.G. 1.070, F.G. (post-primary) 1.002, ABV (post-primary): 8.93%.

Batch Split: A. 3 gallons w/ 1.25 lbs of dried apricots (rehydrated) and WLP 650 – Brettanomyces Bruxellensis B. About 2.5 gallons – base / “clean” beer.

TBP Presents: Sierra Nevada Beer Camp Across America @ Blind Tiger Ale House

On Wednesday, July 23rd I attended a special event at Blind Tiger Ale House (281 Bleecker Street New York, NY 10014) featuring Sierra Nevada Brewing Company’s (SN) 12 Beer Camp Across America collaboration beers. After sampling 2 of the beers, I took 10 minutes to chat with Jan Apanich, SN’s New York City area manager about the beers and the recent growth of Sierra Nevada’s size and it’s at times pigeon-holed reputation of being a exclusively (or primarly) hop forward beer brewery. Being that many craft beer drinkers (myself included) agree about this reputation / opinion; Jan’s answers gave me hope for new and innovative beers from Sierra Nevada Brewing Company as it expands and establish its presence as a national brewery by having both a West Coast (Chico, CA) brewery and an East Coast (Mills River, NC) brewery.

In the end I tried 6 of the 12 collaboration beers and liked Double Latte, SN’s collaboration with Ninkasi Brewing Company the most. Comment below if you’ve tried any of these beers and which one/s you liked the best. Cheers to Sierra Nevada Brewing Company and Blind Tiger Ale House for yet another great craft beer experience!

Brouwers Verzet Oud Bruin 2013

10366177_679883730917_4968579007089597774_nBrewers Description: This “old brown” is a beer that we like to call our flagship, it is a typical beer style for our region. This beer is a blend of some ‘old’ brown beer that has already matured in oak barrels for six months behind, and some “young” brown beer. Each barrel is tasted separately and in taste is cut up into different concentrations with each other. Thus we get the perfect blend. Each year, the taste slightly different. The main characteristics remain always the same: The aroma is dominated by green apple, red fruits and oak. The taste is very sour and refreshing thirst-quenching. Let it tastes! Old Brown has an alcohol content of 6% and is available in bottles of Gueuze 37.5 cl.

In today’s craft beer culture sour beers are often seen as the ideal sign of a brewer or brewery’s ability to craft a master piece of a beer, one which craft beer drinkers quickly seek out in order to experience a new level of beer complexity.  However, sometimes great sour beers exist under the radar and are only enjoyed by the lucky few who discover them at their local bars and bottle shops…In my opinion one of these “hidden gems” is Brouwers Verzet’s Oud Bruin. I was first introduced to it by Artisanal Imports‘ northeastern US representative Alex Holmes while sipping on some Green Flash Brewing Company beers at Rattle n Hum back in November of 2013 and was lucky to be given 2 bottles of review a couple months later. Hence, the following review summarizes my thoughts on this beer when I opened up one of the review bottles and jotted down tasting notes in May 2014.

This beer was a lively one from the get go i.e. despite chilling the beer for a few hours it gushed a bit when I opened it. However, after cleaning off my dining room table I was able to pour most of the bottle into my tulip glass. It poured a great dark red color with brown hues on the edges and as I drank the beer  a ring of head/foam stuck around.

It’s aroma and flavor profile represent exactly what I look for in an oud bruin. Lots of sweet toffee, caramel, and dark cherry notes are accentuated by tart apple, wild yeast funk, and a touch of balsamic vinegar sourness. This complex progression of flavors was met by a somewhat dry finish and medium mouthfeel that brought out more of the tartness and funk and kept me coming back for the next thirst quenching sip. Though I should note that this beer’s complexity makes it a perfect after dinner sipper i.e. a beer that can be savored as it gets closer to being room temperature.

Overall, Brouwers Verzet’s Oud Bruin is a beer that is on par with more well known examples of its style such as Rodenbach Grand Cru and Duchesse de Bourgogne and should be sought out by those that enjoy sour beers. I plan on aging my second review bottle and possibly reviewing it in the future to let you know how this beer matures over time. Rating: 9/10

Click this link to find out where to buy it and other unique Belgian beers.

About Brouwers Verzet:

  • 3 young guys graduated as brew engineers in 2008.
  • Immediately, all 3 started to work at bigger breweries but couldn’t brew their own creations.
  • In the weekend, they needed a “fun time” or “verzet” and started to brew their own beers.
  • People loved their beers and the brewery was born.
  • Check out this video…It’s in Dutch, but showcases their beers and perspective on brewing in a way that English speakers can still learn from.

Homebrew Wednesday 31: Interborough Brown Ale Brew Day

On Wednesday, July 2, 2014 at Bitter and Esters’  July bottle swap owner John LaPolla introduced a randomly chosen collaboration homebrew contest where the winners would win a $40 gift certificate to the store. In order to choose the collaborators he had all those who were interested in participating write their names and email addresses on a pieces of paper and place them in a hat. He then picked two names at a time and they were given the task of collaborating on a beer that would be judged by the attendees of the September bottle swap. So out of sheer luck my name was drawn along with Sean Torres, president of Staten Island’s Pour Standards homebrewing club. Being that we were already friends and knew a bit about each other’s perspective on brewing; the process of putting together a recipe for our beer was quite easy and quick. First, I presented the idea of brewing an American Brown Ale w/ some added oats for mouthfeel. Then upon getting the okay from Sean I put together a base recipe that was inspired by Cigar City Brewing Company’s Maduro Oatmeal Brown Ale and named the beer Inter-borough Brown Ale (Sean lives Staten Island, Bitter & Esters is in Brooklyn, and I live in Manhattan). From there we made a few tweaks, scaled up the recipe to Sean’s 10 gallon brewing system, and in turn we were set to brew the beer on Sunday, July 20th.

Sean and I both hope you enjoy this brew day video as much as we enjoyed brewing the beer itself. Cheers and keep on brewing!!

Homebrew Wednesday #29: The Farmhouse is Flowing!

As I prepared to brew my 7 Blessing Rye Saison on Sunday 7/6/14 there were several purchases that I had to make and some equipment that needed testing in order to insure that brew day would go as smooth as possible. As such, this Homebrew Wednesday 29 covers most of the prep work that needs / needed to get done. First I go over the recipe and why I chose the yeast strain that I used. Next, I talk about my new wort chilling set up i.e. a submersible pond pump circulation ice water threw my copper wort chiller. Then after coming back from The July bottle swap at Bitter and Esters, I show you the aforementioned purchases and talk about an IPA brewed by John Palmer when he was in New York City in May (same weekend that I interviewed him). Lastly, I wrap up HBW #29 by talking about some other videos that are coming up on The Brewed Palate.

 Shoutouts:

Dan ABA – Sour Beer Expert
Patsfan1284 – Innovate all grain brewing
SJ Porr – Founder of the Homebrew Wednesday movement
